Saying bye-bye to the heat wave

Nothing beats the sights of the Old Porvoo as the flowers blossom and it's green all over, and the temperature rises to 20 and beyond. The 600 year-old history comes alive when the tourists hit the town. So far it’s been some 200 000 foreign visitors and there are still days to count before the schools start in southern Europe. This summer has been an extreme summer in many ways: I’ve been able to visit one of my favourite cities abroad and been invited to chill out in the secret, privately-owned, gardens of my dear hometown. There would be stories to tell you but I’d better to keep it all to myself for now.

In Porvoo the best is yet to come: in 2012 you can walk across the reconstructed main bridge and visit the art factory that’s being build in the city center. The Old Porvoo will remain the same, so it looks, but there might be some minor changes in the look and feel.

The high season is on the way.

This year, Porvoo was chosen to be Finland's most popular travel destination. It's been scientificly proved by a survey targeted at the 15-79 year-olds, some 4,000, Finns on March 2011. The winning city is announced annually.

How come I'm slightly questioning this? The results of a survey and the practice do not usually go hand in hand, even though the results show the city is on the right track: tourists love our town over many of our competitors. Supposingly, we won due to the cultural history, aesthetics, and the sea view. And maybe, just maybe, because we have an amazing old town dating back to the 14th century.

I wouldn't. That's why I live and work here and sometimes walk around with the camera. Like a true tourist.

Hi ya all cartoon fans!

Do we have news for you! We will be soon setting the Design Deli table with the latest novelty in our retail selection of limited edition: the cartoon tableware designed for us by a Porvoo-based cartoonist and illustrator Kaisa Leka.

In Finland, the buzz around the locally produced and organic food is getting stronger by a week, and we thought to do our share by joining local forces with talented Kaisa. The theme of the few comic strips is based on Kaisa's familiar character, the adventurous mouse with a good sense of humour. As it's occasionally a freezing cold weather in Finland, the mouse welcomes a newly-baked and homemade, crusty French bread under the covers.

During March, our cartoon porcelain will be featured at the tables of a local fine-dining restaurant Wanha Laamanni. Take a look at the menu, specialized in organic and locally produced ingredients durign the theme weeks. Bon appétit!

Did you enjoy the holidays as much as I did?

I ate well, worked well enough and slept even better during the break in-between the christmas and new year. After the hectic December my brain needed time off from work and the daily routines. Don’t get me wrong – it’s always nice to meet the customers but the problem is the lack of time during the peak-season. I’m also planning to grow another set of hands, just for the fun of it. There are times, usually on the last week of December, when an extra pair would come very handy.

What surprised me was that after having a few lazy, careless days I had to set my mind on something creative. It was not one but two nights when I sat at my computer and felt like an Einstein when thinking of new things to launch. Was it really worth it, well, you and the other customers in 2011 will tell.

How hard is it to predict the future? We at Design Deli have nearly six years of tough labour behind us now. After having to admit that the first two years were the toughest, it’s time to look and lean back to see why we are doing what we are doing. Great news to start the year with: the economy seems to be heading towards the stronger growth in Finland. Bye-bye economic dive, you are so last season!

We can't applause enough to our slow life hometown of Porvoo, which seems to collect all the creative people from the hectic Helsinki. Once you have visited Porvoo you can maybe feel "the magnet" yourself. Reasons for the relocation are many but one's a fact: there are so many advertising and media pros in this tiny town that we could establish an army of illustrators, writers, editors, musicians, directors, designers, artists, and much more. The funny thing is that so many of them drive daily to the capital and back for the paycheck. How about employing these people in Porvoo, even part-time? If you ask us, Porvoo needs an instant liposuction and thereafter an urban facelift in order to attract new audiences.

Something special this Christmas.

One of our customers walked into the shop this week and asked whether we would be interested in retailing her piles of vintage gift wrap from the 50-60's. Would nostalgia lover say no?

We were introduced the loveliest collection of 52 x 70 cm sheets of various patterns. These sheets are supposingly printed in Finland, and the designer might as well be Finnish. Does anyone recognize this pattern or know more about its origin, please contact us. We set the price to 3,50 e per sheet due to rather good condition. These vintage pearls are not available in our webstore.

A piece of Old Porvoo soon in Tokyo.

Soon, very soon will Pirkko of Porvoo travel to Tokyo to promote our lovely old town of Porvoo. How come Pirkko is doing the marketing shift? Well - we have had our hands full with illustrating the tableware with the Finnish artists' helpful hands and somewhere in between someone (we do know who) walked into the shop and wanted to introduce Pirkko products to her japanese clients. The rest is almost history.

Does the city Mayor of Porvoo know something about this? - Noup. Will he? - Yes, as long as he keeps an eye on the creative industry that's constantly bubbling under in the city.

Wish we could have been there to see the enthusiastic faces of Hel yes restaurant visitors during London Design Week. For those locals who actually got the reservation booked it must be a pure joy and a culinary experience to remember. No doubt, the successful concept could be cloned to other cities as well. Yes!

Things develop, so do we. We started out with blogging in Finnish and added some English in order to keep in touch with our foreign customers. Today, Pirkko of Porvoo has her hands so full of work in running the retail store and everything that comes with it. From now on, you can follow Design Deli's life in Porvoo in English in the blog. Kulkupelin elinkaari.

Hyvät ideat ja tuotteet kypsyvät useimmiten aivan silmien edessä - tai jalkojen alla. Kun idean päällä tarpeeksi seisoo, se jalostuu vaikka koruiksi. Näin kävi rovaniemeläiselle Skateboard Jewellery -merkille, jonka koruvalikoimaa pian edustamme Porvoossa. Mainio unisex-lahjavinkki, ja kovaakin menoa sietävä tuote. Mikä parasta, värisävyt vaihtelevat sattumanvaraisesti.

Tuorein yhteistyökumppanimme, graafinen suunnittelija Jutta Kivilompolo suunnitteli meille Kuningatar & Kunkku -kuvituksen, joka käy pöytään huumorilla ja hyvällä maulla. Yhdistele uusia ja vanhoja astioita - toimii ryhdikkäänä seurana, kattausten sivujuonena!

Kuvittajahakumme tuotti monta hyvää ehdotusta ja yhteistyötarjousta kevään kuluessa. Uudeksi kumppaniksemme valikoitui Lahden Muotoiluinstituutista graafiseksi suunnittelijaksi valmistunut helsinkiläinen Jutta Kivilompolo, jonka idean Kuningattaresta & Kunkusta päätimme toteuttaa astioiksi.



Kuvassa Kunkku-muki, kuningatar jäi vielä tälläytymään peilipöytänsä ääreen. Uudet ja vintage-astiat myynnissä Design Delissä syyskuun lopulla pikanttien detaljien kera. Kuvat painettu Suomessa, astiat laadukasta eurooppalaista valkoposliinia. Kuvitus saatavana myös asiakkaan omiin astioihin.

Porvoon lahja sunnuntaibrunssimusiikille, Hans on the Bass, julkaisee ekakiekkonsa nimeltä Scandinavian Breakfast 10.9.

Ne, joille kierrätetty hyväkuntoinen astia merkitsee karaktääriä, innovatiivisuutta ja laatua, suunnatkaa nokka kohti kauppaamme! Olimme pari viikkoa sitten varsinaisessa aarrejahdissa, vanhojen valkoposliien perässä, ja haaviin tarttui kevyesti romanttisia lautasia muutamaa eri mallia ja kokoa. Joulun lähestyessä piparireunainen Porvoon Pirkon kaveri löytää taatusti uusia ystäviä ja istuu monessa kattauksessa ympäri Suomea. Pssst! Vintage-herkut ovat tunnetusti kortilla, joten nyt kannattaa rientää käymään, jos hakusessa on jotain erilaista kotiin. 50-luvun kalustehelmiä kaupan.

Bongasimme bongausreissullamme uusia kalusteita vanhojen joukkoon. 50-luvun pähkinänvärinen lipasto on palvellut yli 50 vuotta, tosin pienin kolhuin, jotka kuitenkin ovat helposti paikattavissa. Toisen lasioven kulma on kolhaistu muutoissa, mutta siihen löytyy apu lasitusliikkeestä. Kurkkaa verkkokauppaamme, jossa tuote on esillä mittoineen kaikkineen.

Uunituoreet, hollantilaiset itse koottavat ekopaperienkelit uusissa pirteissä mekoissaan pian myynnissä. Saatavana edelleen myös ns. originals-värityksellä (tummemmilla mekoilla) viime vuoden tapaan. Kun pakkauksen avaa, voi melkein kuulla tyttösten äänenavaukset ja puheensorinan...Tule kuuntelemaan, emme juksaa. 7 erimekkoista tyttöstä per pakkaus. Piristävät joulukuusen tai katajanokset, ja virittävät joulumielen - kohta se on taas ovella. Vakkari-Saimi 9 kk.

Nuorin vakkariasiakkaamme, Saimi Helsingistä, poikkesi äitinsä Viivin kanssa kaupalla. Pari kertaa vuodessa pääkaupungista Porvooseen suuntautuva matka on aina molemminpuolinen ilo, ja onpa tytöiltä tullut kerran erittäin mieleenpainuva postikorttitervehdyskin. Se on edelleen teipattu tuohon kakluuniin.

Oi jee. Nyt löysimme ihkulle printillemme kunnon kokoisen ja suoraviivaisen mukin, josta sekä teen- että maitokahvinystävät voivat tästedes nautiskella mielijuomaansa. Ensierä saapuu myyntiin viikolla 30-31. Psst! Muki saatavana myös jälleenmyyntiin, OVH alk. 14,90 e.

Turkki päällä, satoi tai paistoi.

Päivän uupunein asiakas oli kaupassamme pikavieraillut kissa, joka oli autoretkellä Savonlinnasta. Määränpäänä oli Helsinki, mutta jaloitella piti hetki Vanhassa Porvoossa ennen matkan jatkumista. Rotu oli letkeästä olemuksesta päätellen Ragdoll, nimeä ei älytty kysyä. Terveiset kuitenkin. Tiukka tuijotus takahuoneeseen johtuu - moni asiakkaamme varmasti arvaa - mistä.

Tyylilyylit saapuivat.

Paljon odotettu astiaerä saapui tänään. Mustavalkoinen sopii pöytään niin monen muun värin kanssa. Ja kupin allehan sopii taatusti musta Teema-lautanen, esimerkiksi. Seuraavaksi myyntiin saapuvat jämäkät teekupit, jotka nekin ovat varmasti monen asiakkaamme mieleen.

Medieval eye candy and tasteful delights.

Greetings! Traders and merchants' city, Tallinn, is full of surprises year after year. This time was clearly noticeable that Estonians are experts on how to draw tourists even during the economic recession. From the visitor's point of view, there are plenty of eye candy to photograph and star at outside the tourist traps. Take a hint and discover while spending a day or two.


* Enjoy lunch at restaurant Bocca on Olevimägi. Take a peak at the stylish balconies.

* Sneak in the open doors to see the lovely staircases.

* Behind the scenes, make good antique bargains and amaze the artisans' skills.
